Help US diplomats empower Serbians to improve their communities
The Republic of Serbia is a center of influence throughout the Slavic world. It sits at the heart of the Balkan Peninsula, a region that was fractured by a series of conflicts during the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Historically strong relations with the United States deteriorated in 1999 when NATO intervened in Serbia with military force. Throughout the early 2000s, a Kremlin-backed influence campaign further stoked anti-US sentiment—limiting efforts to rebuild diplomatic relations and drawing the country ever closer to Russia. This left Serbians in a one-sided relationship with less power to decide on issues in their own country.
While Serbia has long been a priority partner in the region for the US, the war in Ukraine has increased international focus and raised the stakes for European unity. The US has committed to standing by Serbia in its ongoing effort to adopt western reforms and resist Russian influence within its borders.
Spirit of America is partnering with the US Embassy in Belgrade and local government officials to identify and solve community challenges across Serbia. By supporting existing programs and sponsoring new projects, we promote shared values and put power back into the hands of Serbian citizens to change their country for the better.
Spirit of America provided Leskovac General Hospital with its first ultrasound machine. Three weeks later, the machine detected a life-threatening condition in a patient’s unborn child, saving its life.
With your support, Spirit of America will be able to implement innovative ideas to tackle issues at the ground level. Working directly alongside local partners and the Serbian government, we will improve and enrich lives, and strengthen US-Serbian relations. Give now.
