Nestled in the Horn of Africa, the country of Somalia faces intense challenges and barriers to progress as its people and US troops seek to return it to peace and stability. Currently, the al Qaeda-aligned terrorist group al Shabaab continues to aggressively fight against the Somali government and international troops as they seek to impose their own draconian rule. Al Shabaab uses oppression and violence to further their ends, preying upon innocent Somalis who are unable to defend themselves.
Despite al Shabaab’s barbaric tactics, there are those working to tip the scale in the right direction. The Somali Army – with the help of US forces on the ground – has begun to retake Somalia, village-by-village, from al Shabaab. The fighting is often intense and progress can come at a high price to our troops, the Somali Army, and the Somali citizens simply trying to survive. Often, innocent Somalis bear the brunt of al Shabaab reprisals, including arson, extortion, or outright public execution.
Recently, US forces and the Somali Army liberated the rural village Sabiid from al Shabaab. As reprisal against villagers for working with US troops and local security forces, al Shabaab has historically blocked the roads to the villages, isolating them and preventing trucks carrying food from reaching the people living there. If left unaddressed, Sabiid’s citizens will be forced to relocate to an al Shabaab-controlled neighboring village, or else face starvation. Not only does this create a humanitarian crisis, but it negates the hard-earned victories our troops have made in eradicating the influence of these violent extremists.
With your help, Spirit of America will provide lifesaving food to this village, thus meeting the urgent humanitarian need while preserving the gains of US troops and partner forces in Somalia. Your support at this critical time will save lives and help our troops gain ground in the fight against these al Qaeda-aligned extremists.
