Make an immediate impact by ensuring Ukrainian civilian and military personnel have what they need to clear the skies of Russian drones.

Background

Spirit of America is scaling a proven model for training and equipping the interceptor drone crews that protect Ukraine’s civilians and critical infrastructure from Russian drone attacks. Our partner, Dignitas, is a Ukrainian charity that supports the country’s defenders, first responders, and veterans; its pilot interceptor program has trained more than 1,000 civilians and military personnel since June 2025. Project Freedom Sky will enable Dignitas to expand the recruitment, training, and deployment of interceptor crews across Ukraine.

Interceptor drones are the most effective answer to aerial drone attacks, already accounting for one in three airborne targets destroyed over Ukraine. Ukraine has the interceptors; what it lacks is enough trained crews to fly them. Freedom Sky closes that gap.

Russian drone attacks on Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure have increased

Russia is intensifying its drone campaign against Ukraine’s cities. In a single week in September 2026, it launched more than 2,000 long-range drones, striking power and water systems, gas stations, warehouses, apartment buildings, schools, and libraries to strangle Ukraine’s economy and break its will to keep fighting. Spirit of America has supported Ukraine since 2014, and since the full-scale invasion in 2022, working alongside U.S. troops and military partners, we’ve delivered more than $82 million in lifesaving support. From body armor to preparedness training courses, it all makes a difference in saving lives. Read the latest on our assistance to Ukraine.

What Ukraine needs to defend its skies

Exclusively defensive in nature, Freedom Sky will quadruple the existing instructor corps from 12 to 50, expand four existing training centers, and equip seven new ones, allowing Dignitas to train and equip 500 new interceptor teams (2,000 personnel). The 12-day course prepares the teams to identify, track, and intercept drones; operate as cohesive crews; coordinate with Ukraine’s defense forces; and adapt tactics as the threat evolves. Customized buses and pickup trucks keep the training mobile.

Each crew receives flight controls and goggles, an antenna mast, a laptop and tablet, a charging station, and a Starlink terminal, ready to operate anywhere in Ukraine. Communications campaigns will build public support for Ukraine’s defense forces and encourage civilians to enroll in training. New training curricula on civilian air defense will be shared with NATO allies, contributing to emerging alliance-wide air defense doctrine and strengthening partner nations’ readiness against similar threats.

How Freedom Sky will make a difference

Spirit of America is backing the effort to establish new training sites, certify instructors, and equip teams, which amounts to roughly $13,000 per team. Dignitas estimates these teams could raise Ukraine’s interception rate for conventional Shahed drones from 85–90% today to 90–95%. That can translate into millions of dollars of critical infrastructure protected, and countless lives saved. Russia is also fielding faster jet-powered drones; Ukraine has begun intercepting them and is scaling new interceptors built for the task. As those are fielded, Freedom Sky crews will adopt them through short refresher trainings, keeping pace with the threat.
