Preventing War in West Africa
Niger
A US Army Special Operations Forces Captain told Spirit of America that his job was to prevent war in West Africa.
Niger was besieged by extremist groups – Al Qaeda and Islamic Maghreb, the Islamic State, Boko Haram, and others – that could plunge the country into chaos and war.
The Captain’s mission was to improve stability and security by meeting the needs of the most important tribes. The Captain, his team, and Spirit of America personnel met with the tribal leaders and members of the Nigerien military.
The tribe’s most critical needs were improving livestock health and providing opportunities for their youth – needs the Army Captain could not address with government resources. Spirit of America designed and delivered a package of assistance to fill the gap and meet those needs.
Spirit of America funded a vaccination campaign to immediately improve livestock health, providing dirt bikes so that the veterinarians could reach and treat the nomadic tribes’ cattle.
Spirit of America also funded scholarships so the tribal youth could get veterinary training to improve long-term livestock health while earning a living at the same time.
