THIS PROJECT IS FULLY FUNDED. THANK YOU!
The unprecedented flow of more than 1 million Syrian refugees into Lebanon has placed an extraordinary burden on the Lebanese government’s capacity to govern and provide basic services and security. Nowhere have the effects been more severe than in Arsal, a predominantly Sunni Muslim town set in the mountains near the Syrian border. The combination of sectarian tensions, economic and political marginalization, and the presence of tens of thousands of refugees have transformed the Arsal region into a potential flashpoint that could engulf the entire country.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, a US Army civil affairs team and the Lebanese Army have been exploring ways to alleviate the humanitarian situation and bolster political stability in the region. With winter in full swing, low-income residents are particularly vulnerable to the effects of the cold.
The civil affairs team has relayed to SoA a local urgent need by their Lebanese Army partners for 1,100 winter blankets to be distributed by their Lebanese Army partners in Arsal. Not only will this project improve the town’s humanitarian situation, but it will help develop a stronger relationship between the Army and Arsal residents, a key element of stability.
Your contributions will allow us to improve conditions for the residents of Arsal, and advance stability and security throughout the region.
