The US military, working with local partners in northern Syria, is making steady progress in rolling back the Islamic State, also known as ISIS. While the fight is ongoing, the extremists have lost significant territory, and the flow of foreign fighters to join its ranks has vastly decreased.
However, the population across the region has suffered immensely. Cities across Syria, such as al-Shaddadi, Kobani, Manbij, and others have suffered from heavy damage, with many of their neighborhoods reduced to rubble. While local officials are doing their best to meet the needs of the population, basic services like health and education have been severely impacted by the fighting. The unusually harsh winter weather has further compounded the humanitarian crisis.
US troops in northern Syria are advising anti-ISIS security forces and local leaders. They have identified critical needs that will help their partners in their dangerous mission. Help us support demining efforts, education, health services and the humanitarian response in northern Syria to demonstrate a commitment to one of the United States’ best partners in the fight against the Islamic State.
