The US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, made up of 79 international partners, successfully removed ISIS from its controlled territories in Syria. The coalition’s success brought a semblance of stability to the region and has made the US and our partners and allies safer. While ISIS lost its territorial gains, the group maintains a low-level of insurgency and aspirations to rebuild and reconquer. Consequently, the US-led coalition continues to work closely with its local partners engaging in stabilizing efforts and seeking to ensure the lasting defeat of ISIS.
In northeastern Syria particularly, the fight against ISIS led to a flood of internally displaced persons who escaped the combat zones. These civilians picked up and fled their homes with very little. They are currently living in dire situations inside ill-equipped camps. The harsh winter conditions have only exacerbated the situation. Helping these displaced civilians is important as a humanitarian initiative but also critical to stability efforts. For the US teams in Syria, it has been a challenge to address the urgent needs of these displaced civilians fast enough to help mitigate a long and very cold winter.
Working closely with US teams in Syria, Spirit of America is providing 600 winter blankets for displaced civilians to help them endure the harsh Syrian winter conditions. With your support, these winter blankets will build resilience and goodwill toward the US troops in the area and their local governance partners.
