2018 marks the 26th year of cooperation between the governments of Tajikistan and the United States. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the US Embassy in Dushanbe has worked diligently alongside the Government of Tajikistan to foster greater stability, prosperity, and opportunity for the Tajik people. An instrumental effort by the embassy to further these objectives has been the establishment of “American Spaces”. Consisting of eight locations spread across Tajikistan, the American Spaces are the US mission’s primary information outreach tools. They promote US policy and values and facilitate a deeper understanding between the people of the United States and Tajikistan.

The American Spaces provide a venue for Tajik youth to engage in science, technology, engineering, math, entrepreneurial, and sporting activities, all of which aim to inspire and grow future generations to become leaders and innovators. Additionally, these opportunities deter malign influences that seek to exploit youth.

The American Spaces provide greater access to education and exposure to American values.

The American Space facility located in the capital Dushanbe currently receives over 100,000 visitors a year and is now over capacity. The Public Affairs Section of the US Embassy, which oversees the American Spaces, identified the renovation of the existing large basement as an immediate means to increase learning space and accommodate greater access for youth. Currently, the basement is unusable for youth programming due to safety concerns.

The basement in its current form is not a suitable learning environment due to condition and safety concerns.
