The country of Georgia, or Sakartvelo as it is locally known, is a nation of 3.8 million citizens located in the strategically important Black Sea region. With a landmass less than the size of West Virginia, Georgia plays an outsized role as a regional power and as a steadfast friend of the United States. Georgia has demonstrated their commitment to our friendship through contribution of a higher per capita number of troops to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan than even the United States. As our troops fought shoulder to shoulder, so too did they sacrifice shoulder to shoulder. In gratitude for Georgia’s contributions towards our shared commitment to defend freedom, our diplomatic and military leaders in US Embassy – Tbilisi have taken a leading role in assisting the Georgian government care for their soldiers who returned home with wounds of war. Georgia even took the assistance, experience and expertise of the US military in setting up the Georgian Wounded Warrior Program, and passed the assistance forward, providing similar care for wounded veterans from Ukraine. A member of the US Army National Guard recently contacted Spirit of America with a need to help the Georgian government develop a process to provide custom-built wheelchairs that allow wounded Georgian veterans to readapt and thrive in civilian life. These wheelchairs will be used to develop the blueprint to provide over 150 more wheelchairs from the Georgian government to more veterans in need. These chairs are built by Georgian veterans who have first-hand knowledge of the needs of their fellow brothers-in-arms. With these wheelchairs, the Georgian vets will gain the mobility and independence they need to return to work and school. Spirit of America will be funding the first three custom-built wheelchairs. Georgia continues to demonstrate its commitment as a steadfast friend of the United States in a challenging region. In 2017, US Vice President Mike Pence said “We strongly support Georgia’s aspiration to become a member of NATO. And we’ll continue to work closely to advance the policies that will facilitate becoming a NATO member.” Help demonstrate American friendship and resolve by assisting in Georgian provision of critical care for our friends who sacrificed in the common fight to defend freedom and liberty, as they navigate the path to become a full NATO ally.

Staff members from the Warrior Transition Battalion-Europe exchanged knowledge with Georgian Armed Forces on our countries’ wounded warrior care programs.
