Help US Special Operations Forces renovate the only medical clinic in a rural Georgian village

The nation of Georgia, located in the Caucasus region of Europe with a shared border with Russia, is one of the United States’ closest non-NATO partners. With a history of strong security cooperation in the war in Afghanistan, the United States has deepened its strategic partnership with Georgia since Russia invaded the country in 2008, followed in 2014 by its invasion of Ukraine. After invading Georgia in 2008, Russia unilaterally recognized the independence of the breakaway regions Abkhazia and South Ossetia, both of which exist within Georgia’s sovereign territory. Still today, approximately 20% of Georgian territory is occupied by Russian military forces. The Administrative Boundary Line, or ABL, marks the de facto border with the two Georgian regions under separatist control.

The clinic in Lamiskana is the only medical clinic in the area, and its patients come from both the Georgia side of the ABL and the Russian-occupied South Ossetia side.

The US Army Special Operations Forces team deployed in Georgia identified the need to Spirit of America for renovations to the sole medical clinic in Lamiskana, Georgia. The medical clinic provides care to approximately 90 patients a month from the surrounding area but needs major repairs to its roof, plaster walls, electrical wiring, and other basic infrastructure. Located near an ABL crossing point, the Lamiskana clinic offers an opportunity for medical care for those coming from Russian-occupied South Ossetia, where there is an ongoing shortage of basic medical supplies.

The clinic’s flooring, roof, walls, and electrical wiring all need major repairs so the doctors can continue to treat patients.

With your help, Spirit of America and the US Army Special Operations soldiers will be able to renovate the Lamiskana Clinic, resulting in an improved location for Georgians to receive basic health care. It will also strengthen relationships between U.S. soldiers, their Georgian partners, and the communities living alongside, and in, Russian-occupied South Ossetia.
