Doing what you can. How a Marine did what he could.

Dear Friends, One of the great things about America is how we pitch in to make things better. No one tells us we have to do it. We do what we can – even when the odds are against us. We do what we can because we choose to. That initiative, generosity and optimism is what keeps the American experiment alive. It’s why I called our organization “Spirit of America” – so we would always work to represent the very best of America in support of those who serve our nation abroad. There’s a great example of doing what you can that I will never forget. In January 2004 when we were gearing up to provide support to the Marines headed to Iraq, I received an email from a Marine named Paul. He wrote, “I am not a wealthy person and feel that I can’t donate money in large amounts, however, I do have a very little used harmonica that … is capable of putting out excellent music. Can you use it?” paul-st-pierre-email-redacted-v2 This really touched me. It still chokes me up. I emailed Paul and asked him to send the harmonica because his desire to help so symbolized the spirit of America. Paul sent it with a photo from his days as an active duty Marine. We still have both at SoA as an inspiration and a reminder to our whole team to always do what we can. harmonica-and-photo-for-donor-email 12 years later, Spirit of America is providing assistance again in support of Marines in Iraq. Soldiers and Sailors, too. We are gearing up to support a Marine Task Force headed to Afghanistan next year. And, we are providing assistance in support of US troops in Syria, West Africa, Ukraine, Colombia and beyond. If you can pitch in one more time this year, please give here and 100% of your gift will be used to deliver exactly what our troops say is needed. I know that you do many things to help others. Spirit of America is one of them. Thank you for doing what you can. Your initiative, generosity and optimism keep America’s motor running. The Spirit of America team and I wish you and yours a healthy, happy New Year. jim_sig2-copy       Jim Hake www.spiritofamerica.org
