During my 37 years in the U.S. Army, I saw firsthand the extreme challenges our deployed troops and diplomats face. I also saw what happens when Americans join together to solve big problems. 

That is what makes Spirit of America so special. 

When I was Commander of U.S. Army Special Operations Command-Africa, we needed to protect vulnerable communities against attacks from Boko Haram. Within 36 hours, Spirit of America responded with cell phones that connected isolated tribes and villages in vulnerable areas into an early-warning network. The network enabled people to notify friendly security forces of impending threats, preventing attacks from happening and protecting local communities. 

In the most difficult and dangerous places in the world, our missions depended on having the right resources at the right time. Spirit of America filled a critical gap and helped us save lives.
