Protecting sight in the mountains of Kyrgystan

Even on a summer day, the sun’s reflection off the snow-capped mountains that surround a remote corner of Kyrgyzstan can be intense enough to damage the human eye. For herders, laborers, and families who spend long hours outdoors, the result is often eye diseases like snow blindness — a painful condition caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light.

In June, Spirit of America partnered with the U.S. Embassy Bishkek’s Civil Affairs team and the Kyrgyz Red Crescent to help address this challenge in Naryn, one of Kyrgyzstan’s most remote and strategically important regions along the Chinese border.

Known for its stunning mountain landscapes, Naryn’s high-altitude terrain and long winters contribute to often-overlooked public health issues in its underserved community. During engagements with local communities, our partners identified eye health as a recurring concern. Without access to well-staffed hospitals and modern technology, many locals did not know how to find a solution.

In collaboration with our partners, we determined providing health screenings, medical pamphlets, and polarized sunglasses would serve as immediate and practical interventions to help reduce eye damage caused by snow glare. In addition, these screenings would give our partners a chance to connect and build relationships with remote populations and raise awareness about the importance of eye health.

With a relatively modest investment, Spirit of America supported a broader effort by procuring more than 300 polarized, American-made sunglasses and coordinating their delivery for the health screening event in this remote region of Kyrgyzstan.

In the span of four hours, hundreds of locals flocked to the Naryn American Corner, where they received a complimentary pair of sunglasses with free eye examinations and educational programming designed to help community members better understand how to protect their health. The response to the event — and the multinational organizations that came together to address local needs through practical solutions — was overwhelmingly positive, with some locals even wearing USA-themed apparel.

“This event provided me with an excellent opportunity to have my eyes examined and learn about any changes in my vision,” a local librarian told our partners. “I am sincerely grateful to the organizers for making this opportunity available. There were a very large number of people who came for eye screenings that day, which shows how much this service is needed.”

The success of this initiative goes beyond the sunglasses provided or even the event itself. Projects like this one emphasize that the United States is still committed and present to supporting communities, even in a remote region thousands of miles away, by showing up, listening to the needs of the people most impacted, and investing in their well-being. Meaningful cooperation does not — and should not — depend on proximity; action, trust, and a shared commitment to better lives transcend borders.

And for the families who received them, those sunglasses offer something practical and simple, also deeply meaningful: protection for their sight and a clearer view of the mountains they call home.
