Taiwan’s resilience reaches new heights with crisis response drone training

In the heart of Taipei, amidst towering buildings and bustling streets, I heard the air buzz with the hum of drones soaring above. We all know that drones can take amazing aerial images. Taiwanese civil society leaders know that, during a crisis, surveillance drones like these can also save lives.

When I visited Taiwan in May, I saw diverse groups of volunteers—from seasoned first responders to everyday civilians — watch intently as their teammates deployed small surveillance drones to locate and identify various items hidden by their instructors to simulate a search and rescue mission. The simulation was part of a civil society-led training course designed to teach participants how to utilize drone technology to aid their communities and support first responders in the event of a crisis.

The drone course represents the latest initiative by Spirit of America and the local civil society organization, Forward Alliance, to equip Taiwanese civilians with the skills needed to respond and help others in a disaster or emergency. To date, thousands of Taiwanese civilians have participated in our crisis response workshops learning skills in field medical care, fire safety, and navigation, to name a few. Despite their diverse backgrounds, each participant is united by a common goal: to strengthen the safety and security of their communities. This collective action by civilians to prepare, adapt, and overcome in the face of adversity demonstrates Taiwan’s true spirit of resilience.

Adaptation is the driving force behind our crisis response drone initiative with Forward Alliance. Global events have highlighted the critical need for widespread drone capabilities during times of crisis. Thus, the role of technology in enhancing Taiwan’s preparedness has never been more crucial. We believe that by making surveillance drone training more accessible to civilians, we not only enhance the safety of Taiwan but also cultivate a community marked by innovation and readiness. This ensures that the people of Taiwan are better prepared to confront any threats to their way of life.

This initiative serves as an inspiring example of how dedicated citizens can catalyze change across society. With our support, Forward Alliance is set to integrate drones into their civil defense training throughout Taiwan, illustrating the profound impact of grassroots innovation.

Having witnessed these workshops firsthand, I am deeply moved by the resolute spirit of the Taiwanese people. Everyday citizens — students, teachers, parents, and grandparents — selflessly volunteer their free time, not only to enhance community safety but also to preserve their cherished way of life. My experience in Taiwan reminds me that when communities come together with a shared purpose, there is no challenge too great to overcome.
