With the support of our donors, Spirit of America helped the US military train its Beninese army partners in essential medical skills and treatment so they could serve the needs of four villages in central Benin and care for hundreds of men, women, and children, strengthening the relationships between the Beninese security forces and the people they serve.

The coastal west African nation of Benin is being threatened by terrorist groups that are pushing south from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. The terrorist groups are taking advantage of misunderstandings and the lack of trust between northern Beninese communities and the Beninese army that has been deployed to confront threats from these violent extremist groups. Consequently, and as a partial result of the fractured relationship between the national security forces and the northern Beninese communities, many of the terrorist groups have been able to grow their influence in areas of Benin.

To address this vulnerability, the US military conducted a joint exchange training with the Beninese army focused on community engagement activities. They invited Spirit of America to support a capstone event for that training that would directly benefit the communities of four villages in central Benin.
The capstone event, a medical civic action program, allowed the newly trained Beninese soldiers to put their training into practice and address the medical needs of hundreds of Beninese men, women, and children. The end result was a model and experience for the Beninese army on building positive relationships between the existing Beninese security program and the local people they serve.
