Countering extremism in the Middle East
Today we would like to share two projects that, while very different, represent the unique ways the United States is countering the Islamic State and extremism through very local and personal impacts.
In a complex environment like the Middle East, it is important to not only use direct military solutions but also to look at ways to address underlying causes of instability – poverty, lack of education, and lack of basic government services. All of these issues make vulnerable communities more susceptible to the influence of extremist groups.
Here are two ways you can help.
Jordan – educational supplies for refugees and impoverished locals

Lebanon – metal detectors and better security for refugee processing
A US team is partnering with the Lebanese military to safeguard a refugee processing center in northern Lebanon, the area most impacted by Syrians fleeing the war in their country. Read the whole story and join the effort here.
