A letter from Jim Hake
Like you, I care deeply about America and what America stands for. Like you, I am concerned about the many challenges we face.
The challenge motivating us at Spirit of America is that freedom isn’t free. The world is being destabilized by terrorist groups and by authoritarian regimes in Russia, China, and Iran. These adversaries aim to discredit and ultimately destroy free societies and replace America’s leadership with their own. Despite what we may hear about isolationism and retreat, citizens like us must do our part to help our troops do theirs. As former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General (Ret.) Joseph Dunford says, “Without our citizens, we are fighting with one hand tied behind our back.”
I am writing with reasons for optimism.
Americans are far more united than we hear. We just completed extensive research on Americans’ attitudes toward America’s role in the world. Our research encompassed all geographies, political ideologies, and over-18 age groups. We found that 72% of Americans believe America should have a leading or major role in world, and 80% of us are proud to be American.
America is not alone. Everywhere Spirit of America operates, we find people as committed to the idea of America as we are. From Taiwan to Ukraine to the Middle East and beyond, there are many people struggling to achieve free and better lives. They are inspired by the ideals America stands for. Working with and supporting these friends, partners, and allies presents an enormous opportunity.
America has tremendous untapped potential. We have barely begun to harness the power of the American people — the power of people like you and me — to help our troops protect our security and freedoms. In other sectors of society, Americans understand that government-only solutions are not sufficient. In every area of public need — public education, public health, and so on — we know there are gaps and a role for private philanthropy. National security is no different. There are mission-critical gaps between what is needed and what government can do. Gaps that only the American people can fill. Imagine what would be possible if your family and friends joined our coalition of the can do.
You can make the difference. Optimism is one thing. Results are another. America needs results that depend on each of us taking action. Spirit of America will do everything we can, but we need your help.
Join me in standing up for what America stands for. Please support Spirit of America with a year-end gift.
Thank you,
Jim Hake
