Launching the Medical Force Readiness Initiative in Iraqi Kurdistan

A new digital reporting platform is now live in more than 50 Peshmerga medical units across the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, thanks to a year-long collaboration between Spirit of America and the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Peshmerga Forces.

The Medical Force Readiness Initiative, formally launched on April 28, give commanders real-time insight into unit health and readiness, and standardizes the process for medical evacuation, assessment, and treatment across the Peshmerga Forces — a critical step in the modernization and improved combat readiness of a key American security ally in the Middle East.

This new system will help the Peshmerga better understand their soldiers’ health and how best to deploy doctors and other medical personnel to the units that need it most. Keeping troops healthy directly impacts their readiness and success on the frontlines, as well as their success working with partners like the United States to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS.

In January 2025, after nearly six months of development, a small pilot group of medical officers tested early versions of the reporting forms on six tablets, providing feedback that shaped both form design and tablet usability. By March, the refined forms were fully integrated into the platform and subjected to a wider “end-to-end” pilot, to resolve additional glitches and stage for full deployment. Ahead of the April launch, Spirit of America procured 49 additional tablets so every assigned post could submit reports from the field.

The standardized medical reporting is now active at roughly 50 locations. Officers report that submitting data via tablet takes just minutes — information that previously took months to compile. The increased communication capabilities, reporting speed, and improved data management will make this already vital partner to the US an even greater force to be reckoned with in an increasingly dynamic territory.

The initiative’s training launch event in April 2025 brought together 138 medical officers alongside more than 250 guests from the US Consulate, the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs, Coalition partners, and local media. This strong attendance indicates enthusiasm for the initiative across the region and highlights the importance of our continued investment in the stability and strength of our allies in the Middle East.

The Medical Force Readiness Initiative is just another example of the power of Spirit of America’s model. Leveraging the entrepreneurial ideas of deployed American personnel, the talent of local people and government officials, and the flexibility to do what is needed, Spirit of America has launched a platform at a fraction of the cost and time of a government-led solution.
