A Navy SEAL’s view of Spirit of America
REAR ADMIRAL BRIAN L. LOSEY
US NAVY, RETIRED
Fellow Patriot,
I recently retired after 33 years of service as a Navy SEAL. During those decades in uniform, I had the honor and privilege of serving alongside some of America’s premier warfighters. My responsibilities included serving as the commander of Special Operations Command-Africa, and in my final assignment, leading the Naval Special Warfare community and all Navy SEALs as the commander of the Naval Special Warfare Command. I also had ample opportunity to work with Spirit of America in the field. After retiring, I joined the Spirit of America Advisory Board. I’d like to tell you why.
Spirit of America affords a unique opportunity for you to have a direct impact on the security and effectiveness of our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines deployed to the most complex, dynamic, and violent environments in the world today. Our Servicemembers strive to instill security and stability in areas severely impacted by a lack of legitimate opportunity, a dearth of adequate support from governments, and the influences of violent extremists, insurgents, militants and criminals. Spirit of America is a gold standard in private-public partnerships. It highlights the critical role of private sector leadership and support in effectively carrying America’s goodwill and message where the stakes are high.
I met Spirit of America’s CEO, Jim Hake, while working a multitude of wicked security challenges across the continent of Africa. I experienced firsthand the force of his will and commitment to make a difference in producing positive mission outcomes alongside US Servicemembers. I saw the same in the wonderful people who serve as part of the Spirit of America team, many of them former Servicemembers with extensive experience in environments where the greatest common denominator is human misery. The speed and flexibility of the Spirit of America operating model provides support to our troops, partner allies, and vulnerable populations in ways that a purely military or governmental effort simply cannot.
Jim and the Spirit of America team, with your backing, have steadily built trust and confidence in military, governmental, and civil populations around the world by delivering the type of enabling support that effectively advances security and stability. This support translates not only to a higher level of security and stability, it also mitigates risk to our deployed forces.
Today, Spirit of America provides a mature and constantly evolving capability that is tremendously valued by both military commanders and government leaders, and welcomed by civil populations. It was an honor to be associated with Spirit of America in its formative years, and even more so today, after many years of hard work and success on the ground have increased demand for the assistance they provide.
I hope you will support Spirit of America and join me as part of the team. There are a few other ways that your leadership and support can directly influence the success of our troops and their mission.
